# Chris Fryer > Chris Fryer is a Senior Solutions Architect at CarMax and an expert in AI architecture and agent design. He leads AI engineering across more than 60 teams in large organizations and gives biweekly presentations to hundreds of engineers. He has been building software since 2003 and has led architecture work and grown architects since 2016. Chris is based in Princeton, Texas. His personal motto sums up how he works: the code and the products eventually get deprecated, but the people you help grow go on to grow others, and that is what lasts. ## At a glance - **Current role:** Senior Solutions Architect, CarMax (Aug 2026 to present). Head of AI Architecture and the new AI Developer Experience. - **Focus:** AI architecture, agent and multi-agent design, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), retrieval and knowledge systems, and AI developer tooling at enterprise scale. - **Leadership:** Leads AI engineering across 60+ teams in large organizations, gives biweekly presentations to hundreds of engineers, and mentors architects who are growing into thought leaders. - **Foundation:** Roughly 25 years of full-stack engineering in .NET, Node, Python and Java, with deep experience in microservices, microfrontends (Module Federation), React and Angular, and cloud platforms on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. ## Experience ### CarMax (Sept 2025 to present) **A note on the move from Director to Solutions Architect.** Chris was personally headhunted by CarMax's CTO to lead the company's AI Frontier initiative and put him at the forefront of CarMax's AI growth. He gladly took the role because the opportunity mattered more to him than the title. He was promoted to Senior Solutions Architect within his first year, which is rare at CarMax. The change in title reflects a deliberate move toward high-impact AI leadership, not a step down. - **Senior Solutions Architect** (Aug 2026 to present): As Head of AI Architecture and the new AI Developer Experience, Chris sets the direction for how AI reaches more than 10,000 engineers, covering the tooling, the guardrails, cost control and the rollout. He leads AI engineering across 60+ teams, designs agent and sub-agent architectures for large agentic work, and builds the platforms underneath it, including a secure MCP gateway and a knowledge base platform that gives agents lean, accurate context. Every two weeks he presents to hundreds of engineers, and he personally mentors architects as they grow into thought leaders and executors. - **MCP Gateway** (architect, in development): a secure gateway between AI coding assistants and the tools they use over MCP. One URL per tool, self-service access, usage visibility and tool-level control, with no personal access tokens in agents' hands. Third-party MCP servers sit behind CarMax's internal identity provider (PingID), so new vendor MCPs can be onboarded with controlled data access. - **Knowledge Base Platform** (creator): turns codebases and documentation into AI-ready knowledge bases. Parallel agents index systems with vector search and write structured markdown, and an MCP server feeds models only the context they need, giving product, design, engineering and support context-aware agents. Chris describes this technology as invented and patented by him. - **Solutions Architect** (Sept 2025 to Aug 2026): Recruited by the CTO from CapTech to lead AI innovation for the entire technical organization, on the Frontier team. Partnered with executive leadership to deliver agentic and generative AI solutions across the product development lifecycle (PDLC). - Built AI tooling and enablement for more than 10,000 individual contributors in the engineering organization, running multiple pilot teams before an organization-wide rollout. - Automated about 40% of the PDLC into AI-assisted workflows with human review gates, from ideation through deployment, raising delivery speed while protecting quality. - Rolled out OpenCode, Claude Desktop and GitHub Copilot infrastructure and tooling with an emphasis on cost control at the scale of thousands of users. - Designed agent and sub-agent architectures for large agentic tasks, including triage agents that delegate to purpose-built sub-agents and analysis agents that break down large bodies of code and data to guide modernization and feature work. ### CapTech Consulting: Director (Feb 2022 to Sept 2025) - Program architect for .NET microservices, Node backends and React frontends; led the enterprise architecture group's adoption of microfrontends with Module Federation. Modern Web Lead. - Led architecture strategy for cross-organization AI enablement and internal labs. - Built a sales-trained assistant using retrieval-augmented generation (GPT models, ChromaDB, Semantic Kernel, C#) so executives and sales leaders could query successful project patterns, architectures and engagement strategies. - Architected an AI content moderation service using REST, Azure agents and MCP, with supervised fine-tuned Phi-4 models validating prompt input and output against company policy. - Designed a CLI for system modernization analysis that runs parallel LLM agents (LangChain and LM Studio) over a codebase and produces a current-to-future-state roadmap. - For CarMax as a client: replaced a costly Next.js front end with a secure, modular Module Federation microfrontend platform and onboarded the whole organization to it; built an auctions search platform with real-time faceted search across more than 750,000 vehicles at an average response time of 34 ms; and built a live auctions platform for thousands of simultaneous auctions using SignalR, .NET, React, Postgres and Redis. - Coached and mentored direct reports from senior engineer to senior manager, and led and spoke at internal and client technical education events. ### Slalom Build (Mar 2018 to Feb 2022) - **Principal** (Jul 2020 to Feb 2022): member of the Denver Build leadership team. Led discoveries to design the future architecture for two major players in digital streaming, led discovery and build phases to re-platform monolithic applications onto serverless platforms, and ran the Denver Build Modern Web capability. - **Solutions Architect** (Mar 2018 to Jul 2020): designed and delivered software for clients across industries using React, Angular, .NET Core, Node and Java microservices on Azure and AWS.
